Why do I need to take a CVSSA course?

Among other things, CVSSA establishes minimum standards for the training and certification of vessel security personnel, crewmembers, and law enforcement officials in all aspects of prevention, detection, evidence preservation and reporting of criminal activities in international shipboard environment.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT.—Beginning 2 years after the standards are established under subsection (b), no vessel to which this section applies may enter a United States port on a voyage (or voyage segment) on which a United States citizen is a passenger unless there is at least 1 crewmember onboard who is certified as having successfully completed training in the prevention, detection, evidence preservation, and reporting of criminal activities in the international maritime environment on passenger vessels under subsection (a).

The owner of a such a vessel shall maintain certification or other documentation, as prescribed by the Secretary, verifying the training of such individual and provide such documentation upon request for inspection in connection with enforcement of the provisions of this section. This subsection shall take effect 1 year after the date of enactment of the Cruise Vessel Safety and Security Act of 2010 and shall remain in effect until superseded by the requirements of subsection (c). (e) CIVIL PENALTY.—Any person that violates this section or a regulation under this section shall be liable for a civil penalty of not more than $50,000.

Can I use Security Dynamic's and Moxie's eLearning course to provide CVSSA accreditation to my students or employees?

All course materials are available to be licensed by a cruise company or training provider. The entire curriculum is available digitally in order that accredited trainers can utilize this high impact content to train their students in a classroom setting or via their own internal Learning Management System. Can I take the CVSSA curriculum online and get a certificate online?

The CVSSA curriculum must be taken in conjunction with a training provider. Through Moxie Media, the course materials can be taken any time whether it be at your workplace or at home - anywhere you can get an internet connection. Once you have completed all courses, you will be eligible to take a final examination.

How long will it take me to complete the CVSSA curriculum?

The U.S. Coast Guard model course curriculum for CVSSA requires eight hours of training for certification of crime prevention, detection, evidence preservation and reporting in a shipboard environment. The CVSSA curriculum is designed to take anywhere from 8 – 10 hours of seat time. Since the curriculum has interactive exercises and learning checks, some students may take longer than others

If I start the internet-based CVSSA curriculum and have to log out before I finish, will I have to start all over again when I get back in?

The internet-based CVSSA curriculum has a bookmarking feature that allows you to start your training where you left off the last time. You can log in and log out as many times as it takes to complete all course lessons and the survey within 60 days of course registration.

How long will I have to complete the CVSSA curriculum?

You will have access to the internet-based curriculum for 60 days from the day you are registered. If your course expires after 60 days, you will need to re-register and pay for the course.

If I have any questions concerning safe work practices and procedures during the course, how can I contact my accredited training instructor if I am taking the course outside of the classroom?

Upon completion of registration, you will be emailed the contact email address and phone number of your instructor. For any inquiry, your instructor will either call or email you depending upon the complexity of the issue, with expert guidance addressing your concern.

Will I have any follow-up resources available to me that I can reference while on the job even after I have completed the curriculum?

Upon completion of registration, you will receive a PDF Student Manual that you can print out for future reference to safety and security issues while on the job.

What happens to my personal information after I complete the curriculum?

As part of the registration process, you will be asked to accept the terms and conditions of the course which gives Moxie Media, Security Dynamics, your employer, and accredited training provider permission to transfer your personal information and training results to be stored and displayed in secure industry approved databases.

The identity of students will undergo verification and be evidenced through one of the forms of photo identification listed under section (h) below. Student identity will be established, controlled, provided and administered at the training provider's centralized location. (h) Acceptable forms of identification are: (1) Merchant Mariner Document; (2) National Passport; (3) Armed Forces Identification Card; (4) Photo identification cards issued by U.S. Federal, state or local government agencies; or (5) Driver's license with photo.
